Mixing fact and fiction, the second season of the anthology "Monsters" on Netflix is already a success around the world. In these new episodes, the production recalls the shocking murders of José and Kitty Menendez, carried out by their own children, Lyle and Erik, in the family mansion in Beverly Hills, California.
In addition to reliving the brutal night, the investigations and convictions of the brothers, the new season stands out by presenting both sides of the same story.
On one side, the prosecution alleged that the brothers were motivated by the family fortune. On the other, the defense revealed that, in fact, the brothers were abused by their parents for years.
Still, the series mixes fact and fiction, making many question whether some scenes actually happened in real life. One of these moments happens in the final moments.
Spoiler alert!
In the last episode, Netflix subscribers follow the outcome of the brothers' second trial, when a jury would decide their fates. In a scene that seems more like fiction, a heated debate comes to life between tough female jurors.
Out of control, juror Leigh argues that the brothers would have invented the shocking allegations of abuse against their parents, which would justify the death penalty for both.
At the height of the argument, the woman suffers what appears to be a heart attack and falls to the floor. As a result, she is replaced by another member of the jury. So, the question remains: did this incident really happen or was it a poetic license of the production?
In real life, after the brothers' final considerations, the jury met to deliberate on the verdict. 14 days after the beginning of the discussions, the judge replaced two jurors in the case: one of them went into premature labor and the other suffered a heart attack. The second case is exactly as we see in the series.
Although there is no explicit confirmation on screen that Leigh suffered a heart attack, this is the suggested interpretation.
Differences
There are some notable differences between fiction and reality. In real life, the women were replaced by a male juror and a female juror.
In the series, however, these replacements occurred during the sentencing phase, and not during the deliberation on the Menendezes' guilt.
All episodes of "Menendez Brothers: The Parents' Killers" can now be viewed on the Netflix streaming platform.
